Stage Collapse at the Indiana State Fair
Fines totaling more than $80,000 have been issued to a sound company, the Indiana State Fair Commission and a stagehands union
in connection with the Aug. 13 stage collapse at
Sugarland's concert at the
fair. Seven people were killed and 58 injured when heavy winds toppled equipment that hung over the stage prior to the duo's
performance. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration imposed a $63,000 fine to Mid-America Sound Corp.,
an Indiana company which provided the equipment and stage construction. The fair was fined $6,300 while the International
Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees Local 30 received an $11,300 fine. Indiana commissioner of labor Lori A. Torres
said the state agency is investigating potential workplace safety violations, not to assign blame for the stage collapse.
Numerous lawsuits and other claims have been filed following the accident.
