Carrie Underwood will star in NBC's production of
The Sound of Music based
on the original Broadway musical. Set to be broadcast live as a three-hour event during the 2013 holiday season, Underwood
will be cast as Maria von Trapp in the lead role made famous by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film version. The Broadway production
premiered in 1959 with a libretto by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and a score by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
II. It features classic songs such as "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi." Underwood continues her Blown Away tour with shows
Friday (Nov. 30) in Long Island, N.Y., and Saturday in Newark, N.J.
