Carrie Underwood will star in NBC's production of The Sound of Music based on the original Broadway musical. Set to be broadcast live as a three-hour event during the 2013 holiday season, Underwood will be cast as Maria von Trapp in the lead role made famous by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film version. The Broadway production premiered in 1959 with a libretto by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and a score by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It features classic songs such as "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi." Underwood continues her Blown Away tour with shows Friday (Nov. 30) in Long Island, N.Y., and Saturday in Newark, N.J.
