The American Red Cross has launched a massive emergency relief effort to meet unprecedented humanitarian needs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
- The American Red Cross continues to work with their partners to provide food and sheltering to the victims in the affected areas. More than 270 shelters have been opened with many others on standby to open if needed.
- In coordination with the Southern Baptists, preparations are underway to serve nearly 500,000 hot meals each day.
- As ever-worsening conditions continue to unfold, the American Red Cross warns residents to heed warnings from authorities because danger continues to linger. Rising water levels, impassable roads, downed power lines, sporadic gas fires and damaged structures are all major hazards.
Although the storm has passed, many affected areas are under new evacuation orders as levees are compromised and rushing waters rise.
- Texas officials, along with the support from the American Red Cross, have developed a plan to transport approximately 23,000 refugees from Louisiana to the Houston Astrodome for shelter and feeding services.
- The Red Cross is working closely with our government and health services partners to develop health strategies and preventative measures to help the public and relief workers cope with the recently declared public health emergency.
Due to the generosity of the American people, the American Red Cross stands ready to meet the monumental challenge of helping to rebuild lives.
