Two fathers - a mill worker from rural Georgia and an attorney from New York City - swap families for one week, only to be told they get to decide how the $50,000 prize money is to be distributed.
Jay Cooke, a plywood-mill worker from Georgia, says his family lives a very simple life. His wife, Brandi, thinks the rural house where they live is a dump. She complains about having little or no control over her kids. Jay says spending time with his family is extremely important to him. Whenever he leaves his family, it makes him sad.
In New York City, Attorney Justin Levine runs his own law firm. His son, Pierce, says it's not unusual for him and his sister, Molly, to eat dinner without their dad. Pierce describes his mother, Barbara, as being very high-strung. As Justin prepares to embark for his journey to Georgia, he says he regrets leaving town because his son is preparing for an upcoming bar mitzvah. His daughter is about to lose a tooth, but he won't be around to help out.
The time comes for both fathers to say their final goodbyes. When Jay arrives in New York, the Levines are there to greet him. Jay is awed by the buildings and people of the big city. When Justin arrives at the Cooke house, he reacts to the sight of their many animals, including rabbits, chickens, and turkeys. Pierce takes Jay for a little sightseeing around the upscale building where he and his family live. Meanwhile Justin has to adjust to sleeping in the Cookes' dumpy house.
