OFFSTAGE: Luke Bryan Mixes Twerking With Hip-Hop

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

The conversation started with Chelsea Handler asking Luke Bryan about twerking. It's that dance with your hands on your hips, your feet apart and your hips bouncing up and down. Like Bryan sometimes does -- momentarily and usually by accident -- during "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)."

"I just get up there and dance, and if it looks like twerking, then you can say, 'Hey he twerked right there,'" he told Handler on Chelsea Lately on Tuesday (Aug. 13).

But it's how the dancing all got started that I found so entertaining. Bryan explained that when he and his band started doing "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)," there were a lot of injured back muscles and hamstrings. So they added a 1992 Sir Mix-a-Lot hip-hop song to their live show set list to strengthen their cores.

"What's amazing is everybody knows 'Baby Got Back,'" Bryan said. "There are 65-year-old men out there with western shirts on and bolo ties."

A man in a bolo tie rapping may be an unlikely image, but certainly no more so than the son of a Georgia peanut farmer twerking.
