Mitchell Tenpenny Opens Up About The Writing And Recording Process Behind New Album, "This Is The Heavy"

Mitchell Tenpenny talks collaboration with Teddy Swims and finding the right creatives to work with in Nashville.

Mitchell Tenpenny's career is at an all-time high.

On the heels of going No.1 with the single "Truth About You" and "At The End Of A Bar" with labelmate Chris Young, the country mainstay dropped a 20-song album.

The full-length collection titled "This Is The Heavy," was released in early September and immediately received world-renowned praise for his vulnerable songwriting and country-modern sound. The breakout star recruited Nashville's finest to cultivate the LP –   Thomas Archer, Brad Clawson, Rodney Clawson, Devin Dawson, Chris DeStefano, Seth Ennis, Kyle Fishman, Jesse Frasure, Ashley Gorley, Josh Kear, Laura Veltz, and more.

The Jordan M. Schmidt-produced project includes a collaboration with Teddy Swims, a genre-bending artist best-known for his tracks "Broke" with Thomas Rhett, "Bed On Fire" featuring Ingrid Andress and Meghan Trainor's "Bad For Me."

Tenpenny recently (Oct. 20) joined "Today's Country Radio" with Kalleigh Bannen to discuss their electronic duet "Elephant in the Room" and to share secrets behind the entire body of work.

The friendship between Tenpenny and Swims blossomed over the internet nearly four years ago, when the "We Got History" singer slid into his DM's to compliment a cover he uploaded onto YouTube.

"I was like, that's one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard. He sent back to me, 'Oh my gosh, I'm obsessed with 'Drunk Me.' I can't believe it.' So we talked for three years just online, never met," he recalled to the outlet. "One day he called me, 'I'm coming in from Atlanta, man. Let's hang out,' and we did, and we were brothers immediately. We were just a mutual respect, and I was blown away. I was like, 'Dude, you know my music?' And it was vice versa. It was just a mutual respect for each other. I don't know. He's one of the most talented dudes I've ever met in my entire life. The control of his voice, it's spiritual man."

The techno-like dance track includes impressive drum solos and a catchy chorus that will leave you dancing in your seat. Tenpenny co-wrote the song alongside Christian Griswold, Sean Small, Sam Sumser, Jaten Dimsdale. They convey a  love story about two individuals with chemistry. The romantic energy within the room is so powerful, that people around them can almost feel it. The country crooner said that recording the club-ready banger was a memory he would never forget.

"He's the sweetest boy in the world. I love him. I love him to death. He just makes you want to be better. I love singing with him. I love it. Melodies come out that I didn't even know I had when I'm singing with him. You're just kind of Tommy topping each other, just trying to one up, and it's just fun," gushed Tenpenny. "I don't know. We've written a lot of songs, and I just love every time I see him on the calendar, we're there. First off, it's going to be fun, but it is going to be good because he's great, and I know he's going to challenge me and I'm going to want to bring it 100%."

He continued to stress the importance of finding the right songwriters in town to work with. He confidently confessed that he placed his trust within his tight-knit group to create the well-rounded album.

"You find the people that you write well with that let you do what you do and add to it, don't change you. I wrote this record with all my best friends, and we've written a lot of songs together so they know what my strengths are, what I do well, and then they let me do that while they add their strengths, and I let them do that," he pointed out in the episode. "It is cohesive. We enjoy each other's opinions, and we don't fight. It's just fun to write songs. Once you've done it so many times with certain people, you just trust them. You trust the instincts."

It's been four years since Tenpenny released a record, leaving him with the opportunity to address topics he experienced since then.

There's certain songs that are definitely influenced by things that have happened to me in life, but I like to make stories up and try to create and invent something that really evokes an emotion. So even "Truth About You," there's some truth to that. I've dealt with that a little bit, and I know people have, but I wrote that whole thing trying to make a movie out of it so that it really hits hard when you hear it,"

He also acknowledged that the country landscape has changed since 2018. Although Tenpenny is witnessing the significant shift, he believes the core fundamentals of the craft remain the same.

"It's been four years since I released a record. I've grown a lot in that time, and life has gotten heavier for sure. Country music these days, everyone can fight over what's country music, what's new, and you can have your own arguments, but to me, country music is always the lyrics. It's always going to be the lyrics. It's going to be the storytelling."

The hitmaker is slated to hit the road in January for his headlining This Is The Heavy Tour. Country breakout star Tyler Braden will be joining the vocalist as direct support. The two will kick off in Salt Lake City and wrap up on February 25 in Athens, GA. Tickets are available for purchase, here
