Next Up Now: Denitia Turns to Hudson Valley Sunset for Inspiration for New Video "My Weakness"

"It’s a type of pining that feels like it will never leave you. We wanted to use nature as a backdrop to represent this greater force."

Texas native Denitia moved to Nashville, Tennessee, from her home state to go to college and then kept traveling north to Brooklyn, New York. She collected influences from every city she called home and wove them into her song “My Weakness” and its new video.

“Some of the most gorgeous sunsets I’ve seen are in the Hudson Valley of New York State,” she said. “I really wanted to interact with that to capture the feeling that ‘My Weakness’ invokes. Walking through the wide-open field as the sun went down on that October evening, there was a really special moment after one of those takes. We knew we had tapped into the magic we were after, and it felt surreal and so right at the same time.”

Denitia wrote “My Weakness” with Jonathan Dagan. Brad Allen Williams produced the song. Evan Daves directed the clip.

The singer says “My Weakness” was inspired by being drawn to another person.

“It’s a type of pining that feels like it will never leave you,” she said. “We wanted to use nature as a backdrop to represent this greater force - the lake ebbing back and forth on the shore, the limitlessness of the sky. Sometimes, a feeling can be so strong that you’re not sure where it ends or where it begins, but it’s okay to let go and let it be whatever it is. This video is an exploration of living in that emotion and ultimately finding freedom from it.”

She says that one of her missions as an artist is to tell her story authentically and put something beautiful into the world.

“What I love about music is that the stories connect us all as humans, no matter where you’re coming from,” she said. “I hope people step into this visual and sonic world we created and they experience something that moves them.”

When she saw the video for “My Weakness” for the first time, she said she couldn’t have been happier.

“I felt we created something really inviting and vast that expresses the bittersweet longing of ‘My Weakness,’” she said.
