Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton didn't expect to win the female and male vocalist trophies at the CMA Awards this year, they admitted to reporters backstage on Wednesday night (Nov. 9) in Nashville.
It's the second consecutive year the couple, who got married in May, claimed those awards.
"Last year when it happened, in the back of my mind, I had that idea that maybe I'll win this because I've been doing this so long and the industry probably feels sorry for me a little bit!" Shelton said with a laugh. "And maybe I got the underdog vote. But this year, I didn't think I could get away with that. It means a lot to me because for the first time I feel secure in the country music industry because it's such a fickle industry."
Lambert noted, "I was really surprised. Honestly, I'm humbled. I had a great year last year. I won three CMAs on my birthday. So I was just here to be here and to be a part of it. But I was totally expecting someone else to take this home this year."
Asked about his drink of choice at the awards show after-party, Shelton replied, "I've already had a little bit. I think the drink of choice will be the first thing that somebody hands me when I walk in. I'm excited. I know right now I seem a little bit low-key, and it's because I'm numb right now."
Lambert noted the whole year has been a little fuzzy for her.
"I have so much to be thankful for," she said. "I've had so much that happened that I don't even remember right now because it's crazy and hectic. Releasing an album on the heels of a big tour is exhausting.
"This is a great way to end all of that. I'm going to sit around at Christmas and Google myself because I have no idea what I've been doing! I'm so thankful, and I'm trying to get better about living in the moment because every moment is so great right now. I'm trying to absorb it all and stay humbled and keep moving forward."
During her acceptance speech on the show, Lambert told Shelton that they'd be celebrating later that night -- and the camera cut to Shelton grinning and rubbing his hands like an eager boy.
"I have no idea what I said, but everybody thinks Blake is getting lucky," Lambert told the press room, causing a round of laughter. "I didn't prepare anything. I told you, I was really surprised."
Naturally, Shelton got the biggest laugh of the night backstage. Clutching the tall, pointy award, he told reporters, "I can tell you all that when I wake up in the morning, it's going to look like this trophy is under my sheets. And it's not going to be. That's how happy I am about winning this thing. The feeling is not going away for a long time."
