Alabama Bassist Teddy Gentry Arrested on Marijuana Charges
Teddy Gentry, the affable bass player in Country Music Hall of Fame band Alabama, was briefly arrested on marijuana charges in the band’s namesake state on Monday.
According to jail records, Gentry, 70, was booked into the Cherokee County Jail for unlawful possession of marijuana in the second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Gentry was at the jail about 30 minutes and was released on his own recognizance, a spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office confirms to PEOPLE.
Alabama law states unlawful possession in the second degree means the pot was for personal use. Both of Gentry's charges are misdemeanors because recreational marijuana is not legal in Alabama.
The spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said Gentry was originally stopped for speeding. He was driving the vehicle.
Gentry is a founding member of Alabama alongside signer Randy Owen and guitarist Jeff Cook. Cook had to step back from playing with the group over the last few years due to his failing health.
Alabama is known for hit songs including “Mountain Music,” “Dixieland Delight,” “Song of the South” and more. The group was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005, have sold 73 million albums and achieved 21 No. 1 songs. They are also in the midst of a tour. A representative for Alabama said their tour dates won’t be impacted.
