With the holiday season officially in full swing, some tend to get lost in the materialistic aspect of the magical month. However, Brett Young wants his family to remember the true meaning of Christmas.
“In Case You Didn’t Know,” the singer-songwriter is the son of a preacher. Long before Young became one of the biggest stars in country music, he would help his father welcome worshipers to their church congregation every Sunday. During those transformative years, Young became the man he is today and established the core values he now instills in his two daughters – Rowan Marie and Presley Elizabeth.
The platinum-selling performer recently (Nov. 27) caught up with Big Machine Label Group to discuss how he approaches the holiday season in his household.
“Christmas is Christ in our house,” declared Young. “I’m not ever gonna be the dad that doesn’t embrace the Santa Claus thing and all of the fun, but the message of Christ will always be the center of Christmas for us,” he stressed.
He continued to reflect on his own experience and how his father would recite a prayer before they dove deep into presents.
“Even if I wasn’t doing that properly, my dad would make sure that was a part of our holiday season,” he explained to BMLG. “My dad does a great job of doing a very brief devotional and prayer before we open presents every Christmas morning, just kind of reminding the whole family that the reason that we’re here is bigger than Santa coming down with presents out of the chimney.”
Young considers his Christ-based upbringing a blessing and feels extra grateful to have his parents around to curate a similar childhood for his kids.
“It is the faith that brought me up, and it’s something that’s very important to me,” said Young. “I’m very blessed to still have my parents and Taylor’s parents around to instill the message of Christ every Christmas,” he concluded.
The country crooner and his wife, Taylor Mills, tied the knot in 2018 in Palm Desert, California. The two lovebirds welcomed their second child, Rowan Marie Young, in July of 2021 – making Presley an older sister. In a previous interview with Faith & Fitness, Young said that he turned to his religion more than ever when he began to grow his family.
“That’s a huge part of how I deal with the absolute confusion that being new parents bring. Having the ability to completely lean on my faith and trust that God hasn’t put me in a situation that I’m incapable of handling,” he told the outlet. “I’m slowly learning that nobody is prepared for parenthood. You have to give yourself grace and know that you aren’t the first, and you won’t be the last parent that starts out scared.
Young mentioned that he contentiously reminds himself of his relationship with God.
“Just remind yourself daily that God has a plan and hand-picked you to be this child’s parent. Then you lean on that and make things up as you go,” he shared. “As an adult, it becomes completely necessary. The responsibility of being a husband and a father is, for me, the most important thing I’ll experience in my life, and the only way to avoid operating out of fear is to 100% give it to God. There’s so much peace in that.
Following the holiday season, the hitmaker is expected to kick off the new year on his 5 Tour 3 2 1. Morgan Evans and fast-rising star Ashley Cooke will serve as direct support. The multi-city stop will begin in late March in Columbus and will wrap in May at Los Angeles’ legendary Greek Theatre.
Tickets will be available for purchase starting Friday, Dec. 2 at 10 AM local time.
