Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong grew up about 10 minutes from my house in Illinois, so I found it that much more hysterical when she tried to match Blake Shelton’s Southern charms in this new promo for his upcoming appearance on the show on Saturday (Jan. 24).
After a few “Hey, y’all, I’m Blake Shelton, and I’m gonna be your host and musical guest on SNL” back and forths, Strong tells Shelton how much she’s looking forward to having some down South on the show.
“Well, I declare,” Strong says as she’s fanning herself with her hand in that way that exaggerated Southern belles might do. “It’s a breath of fresh air to have some good Southern charm ‘round this show.”
Shelton doubts her Southern roots, even though Strong tells him, “Honey child, I drink sweet tea for breakfast, lunch and supper.”
He goes on to promise some physical comedy, word play and fish-out-of-water sketches. But I think we’re all hoping he plays a part in Strong’s Weekend Update character -- the "Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party.”
Shelton hosts Saturday Night Live airing Saturday (Jan. 24) on NBC.
