Charlie Poole Box Set Due in May

Charlie Poole, a lively banjo player from North Carolina who sold more than 500,000 records in the late 1920s and early 1930s, will be featured in a three-CD box set in May. Poole and his band, the North Carolina Ramblers, recorded mostly for Columbia Records before Poole's death in 1931. Grammy-winning sound engineer Christopher King transferred most of the rare original 78s into a digital format. The box set includes 43 of Poole's recordings, as well as 29 tracks from musicians who influenced -- or were influenced by -- Poole. His best-known recordings, which are still performed by old-time music groups, include "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" and "White House Blues."
