OFFSTAGE: Lauren Alaina's Worst Boyfriend Inspired Best Song

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Now that Lauren Alaina has started writing country songs for herself, she knows what all the best songwriters know: "You can take a bad situation and make a great song out of it," she said in a video interview with

She's been writing songs for her next album and says the process has been good for her. "I've learned so much about myself and my music from sitting in those (songwriting) rooms," she said. "It's like therapy, almost."

Then she tells the story about how she was having a hard day, dealing with her grandfather's Alzheimer's, and so she wrote about it. Then she tells the story about a romance gone wrong. "I wrote a song about my ex-boyfriend, who was terrible and the worst boyfriend I've ever had in my entire life, and I got a great song out of him. So I can thank him for that," she said.

Besides being a way to relieve stress and set herself free from certain situations, Alaina is glad that all the mental notes she's been taking on how to approach songwriting are starting to pay off. "It's like people are recognizing me not only as an artist but as a songwriter," she said.
