Lee Brice isn't all that different from most men. Men who, when pestered by women to take them dancing, say simply, "I don't dance."
Until, you know, there's a girl worth dancing with.
And this is what Brice told me about that special moment and his new single, "I Don't Dance." (It's also the title track for his upcoming album.)
"Maybe I'm starting to be the master at being the tough guy who is not so tough when it comes to the girl," Brice said. "And that's OK because I have guys tell me, 'I get that.' And then I have girls tell me, 'That's so sweet.'"
He told me he'd written the song for his wedding and played a rough work tape of it when he shared his first dance with his wife Sara when they married in April 2013. And when the video for the song premieres, he promises it will be full of footage from their wedding day.
But writing the song didn't happen overnight.
"If you get that idea or just that title 'I Don't Dance,' there are a million ways you can write it," he said. "I took the time to really think about it, and I sat around and sat around and sat around and let it sit in my titles forever. It was the same way when I wrote 'More Than a Memory' (the Garth Brooks hit). I said, 'Let's not just go in and record it. Let's think about it for a while. Anything that's worth doing is worth doing right.'"
Then he added that this song warranted his patience.
"Nine times outta 10, you'll write a good song," he said. "I could write a good song a hundred times a day. Quickly." But to write a great song, Brice says he has to dig deep.
"You have a choice," he explained.
With "I Don't Dance," the result is the kind of story song Brice seems to have mastered.
"I don't dance, but here I am/Spinning you round, round and round in circles/It ain't my style, but I don't care/I'd do anything with you anywhere/You've got me in the palm of your hand."
It's so honest, so emotional and so genuinely suited for any kind of love affair.
But Brice still has a sense of humor intact. At a recent Madison Square Garden show with Luke Bryan, Brice made a "playful swipe" at Bryan's nonstop dancing, saying, "I just don't dance."
