Small Labels Lead New Releases

Several independent labels released country-tinged albums on Tuesday (Jan. 28), ranging from folk to blues to bluegrass. The charming Cheryl Wheeler (“Aces,” “Addicted”) compiles 17 of her quiet and compelling compositions, as well as two new songs, for Different Stripe (Philo). … Soulful songwriter Mark Selby, who co-wrote “There’s Your Trouble” for the Dixie Chicks, gets down on Dirt (Vanguard). … Slide guitar master Sonny Landreth travels back to the blues on The Road We’re On (Sugar Hill). … That’s How I Walk (Philo), from award-winning Canadian songwriter Stephen Fearing, features Shawn Colvin on harmonies. … The late bluegrass fiddler Randy Howard is remembered with I Rest My Case (Sugar Hill). Howard earned his keep as an in-demand studio musician before cancer claimed him in 1999 at age 38. Jerry Douglas, David Grisman, Sam Bush and others join him for this project. 01/29/03
