Patty Griffin Headlines Ryman

Known to CMT viewers for her video “Chief,” Patty Griffin headlined Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium for the first time on Thursday (Jan. 30). Playing for nearly two hours, Griffin welcomed Emmylou Harris to harmonize with her on “Top of the World.” (The Dixie Chicks also recorded the song for their Home CD.) “Now that I’m on CMT, I hope I get invited to sing the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ at a NASCAR race,” she told the crowd, adding that she had recently become a fan of racing after a date at a Dripping Springs, Texas, speedway. Griffin is nominated for a Grammy in the best contemporary folk album category for 1000 Kisses. Alt-country songwriters Buddy and Julie Miller opened the Nashville show. 01/31/03
