Strait to the Top -- Again

Country super-crooner George Strait eased to the top of the Billboard country album charts this week, barely over a week after the release of his new greatest hits compilation, Latest Greatest Straitest Hits. According to Soundscan, the album claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top Country Album list, as well as the No. 2 position on the trade magazine's overall top 200 album chart. Carlos Santana's Supernatural remains in the top berth. Latest Greatest Straitest Hits is the multi-awarded artist's second highest-ever debut, and in fact, is the second-highest debut in the history of MCA Nashville. The album in the top spot is another Strait project, 1997's Carrying Your Love With Me, which attained No. 1 status the week of April 27, 1997. "This amazing debut speaks to the integrity and longevity George possesses," said Bruce Hinton, MCA Nashville Chairman. "George is an icon, and a living legend." Strait's latest single, "The Best Day," currently sits at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart.
