New $18 Million Incarnation of Gilley's to Open

Night life in Dallas should intensify with the reopening of Gilley's, the storied honky tonk named after country star Mickey Gilley. The original Gilley's, which opened in 1971 in Pasadena, Texas, and was immortalized a decade later in the John Travolta flick Urban Cowboy, closed in 1989 after a devastating fire. Gilley's President Spencer Taylor outlined the details of the $18 million (190,000 square foot) entertainment complex during a press conference Thursday that included entertainment by Gilley, who has loaned his name for another Texas incarnation of the roadhouse proudly dubbed "The World's Greatest Honky-Tonk." Gilley's, expected to open within a year, will include an array of restaurants, a shopping center selling boots, hats, Western wear and Texas novelties, and even a Wild West show. A new building, the Coors Light Showroom, will seat 4,000 for concerts featuring national and regional performers.
