Funeral Services Held for Fiddler Mack Magaha

Funeral services were held Monday (Aug. 18) in Nashville for Mack Magaha, a fiddler best known as a former member of Porter Wagoner’s band, the Wagonmasters. Magaha spent nine years working with the pioneering bluegrass act Reno & Smiley but came to national prominence after joining Wagoner’s band in 1964. A fixture on Wagoner’s syndicated television show, Magaha offered an additional degree of showmanship by dancing while he played behind Wagoner and other soloists on the show, including Dolly Parton. During the ‘70s and ‘80s, Magaha regularly performed at the Opryland theme park. Magaha, 74, died Friday (Aug. 15) at Nashville’s Veterans Hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia. 08/18/03
