When I love a song, I want to know where it came from. Not just who the writers were, but exactly what was happening when they were writing it, what inspired the story and how it went from an idea in someone's head to a song on the radio. So now that Josh Thompson's "Won't Be Lonely Long" is that song on the radio, I asked him what was behind the tune about how if you're going to get dumped, Friday night is the best night for getting your heart broken. Heading into the session with co-writers Arlis Albritton and George Ducas, Thompson said he really wanted to impress them at the session at Ducas' house. "You don't want to sit there and change your Facebook status while you're writing songs. You want every writer you write with to go to the Tin Roof [a Nashville restaurant and bar] and brag, 'I just wrote a great song with Josh Thompson,'" he told me. Albritton was thinking they needed a honky-tonk song. Thompson wrote the first slow part of the song and, from there, he was just on fire. Thompson knew he wanted to go slow into the tempo part of the song and added, "Who doesn't go through a breakup and then go out? Then you've forgotten for like seven hours at least." Which is just what happens in the new video, too. Thompson and a drummer and an upright bass player are busking on Nashville's Lower Broadway, then head into the honk-tonks for shots. When I asked if he'd written the song about one girl in particular, all he'd tell me about his own love life was, "I'm currently dating my bus. It seems to be a really committed relationship. I feel like there's something there."
