OFFSTAGE: Darius Rucker Recalls the "Good Times"

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

When Darius Rucker was asked last week about his favorite country song, he focused on Kris Kristofferson. That's probably because Kristofferson was sitting next to him. During an interview in Washington, D.C., for the Country Music: In Performance at the White House event, Rucker said, "My absolute favorite Kris Kristofferson song of all time was 'For the Good Times.' For me, it was being a little kid growing up in South Carolina listening to Al Green records. And one day I'm 13, and I'm gonna be a songwriter, and I look on the back and it says it was written by Kris Kristofferson."

Dierks Bentley also had a Kristofferson favorite, "To Beat the Devil," but said his very favorite country song was Keith Whitley's "Don't Close Your Eyes." But Lyle Lovett said it best when he can't pick just one song. "Guy Clark, one of my favorite singer-songwriters says songwriting is not a competitive sport," Lovett said. It's hard to argue with the good sense of Guy Clark.
