Loretta Lynn, Jackson Browne to Receive Americana Honors

Flaco Jimenez and Taj Mahal Will Also Accept Lifetime Achievement Awards

Loretta Lynn, Jackson Browne, Tejano musician Flaco Jimenez and roots music master Taj Mahal will be presented lifetime achievement awards at the Americana Music Association's 13th annual Honors and Awards at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Sept. 17.

Lynn, who will receive the award for songwriting, is also a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the recipient of a Grammy lifetime achievement award and a Kennedy Center Honor.

Browne, a respected singer-songwriter, will receive the Spirit of Americana Award/Free Speech in Music honor co-presented by the First Amendment Center. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, he was a key player in the clean energy movement of the '70s and challenged U.S. foreign police in the '80s. He's performed at fundraisers for Farm Aid, Amnesty International, MoveOn.org's Vote for Change and is a cofounder of Musicians United for Safe Energy and nukefree.org.

Jiménez, who will receive the lifetime achievement award as an instrumentalist, is best known to mainstream music fans as the accordionist of the Texas Tornados, a Tex-Mex supergroup of the '80s that also featured Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender and Augie Meyers. He also played a prominent role in Dwight Yoakam's recording of "Streets of Bakersfield" with Buck Owens and has worked with acts as diverse as Dr. John, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.

Henry Saint Clair Fredericks assumed the professional name of Taj Mahal and formed the Rising Sons band with Ry Cooder in the early '60s. Receiving the lifetime achievement award in performance, the multi-instrumentalist's solo recordings have been a virtual history lesson in blues and folk music. He has worked with the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Etta James, Ali Farka Toure, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many others.

The awards ceremony will take place during the 15th annual Americana Music Festival & Conference set for Sept. 17-21 in Nashville.
