Hunter Hayes Took Guitar "Lessons" From Mom

'CMT Inside Fame' Reveals His First School of Rock

Get More:

Before the world got to know Hunter Hayes as a multi-instrumentalist, he was just a kid with a mom who was willing to be his backing band.

And while things didn't actually work out like that, God love her for trying.

"My mom, one summer, decided, 'You know what? How about I go and get a guitar and learn to play so that when you do your acoustic gigs, I can accompany you,'" Hayes reveals in the upcoming episode of CMT Inside Fame.

And that's exactly what she did.

"I signed up, I took a few lessons, and when I would come home from guitar lessons, Hunter would get so excited," she says. "He'd say, 'Mom, what did you learn?'"

Hayes learned a few guitar basics from his mom, and then he just kept getting better and better. Even better than her.

"I kept practicing," he admits, "and she didn't."

Hayes' mom agreed she'd just do the mom thing while her son did the music thing. It looks like that was what was best for everyone.

And it sounds like both of Hayes' parents encouraged him every step of the way.

"My mom is a teacher, and my dad is a mechanic. We didn't have a lot of money growing up, and our house was right next to a train track which had no consistent schedule whatsoever, but it was still cool. My dad has a very mechanical mind, which I presume is the part of me that is interested in getting my pilots license or the technical side of studio gear," Hayes explains in his self-penned bio on his website. "They both have huge hearts and positive, hard-working spirits that have been an incredible influence on me."

CMT Inside Fame: Hunter Hayes premieres Saturday (Nov. 1) at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
