Kenny Rogers Is Flattered to Be Artist of a Lifetime

The Country Icon Will Be Honored at the Upcoming CMT 'Artists of the Year' Special

It seems like just yesterday that Kenny Rogers was belting out “Islands In the Stream” with Dolly Parton, starring in films like Six Pack and his Gambler TV movies and scooping up CMA and Grammy awards left and right.

It’s hard to believe many of these accomplishments actually took place more than 30 years ago.

That’s because throughout his illustrious career, Rogers’ star has truly never faded. Which is exactly why he’s the perfect icon to be named CMT’s Artist of a Lifetime at the upcoming Artists of the Year honors.

“When they sent me the notice, I had to stop and think about it for a minute ... I didn’t know what that meant. And it really is very flattering to be respected in your business,” Rogers told me in a recent chat.

Respected, adored, and often worshiped if we’re honest. CMT’s headquarters are always buzzing when Rogers comes in. We all want to shake his hand, hug him and tell him how much his music and career have richly influenced our lives.

And he’s all about engaging his fans. He knows how to connect with them, and it’s as effortless and genuine as a conversation with an old friend. That’s just another one of the brilliant qualities of his character that make him a superstar, far and wide. And truly, the artist of a lifetime.

CMT’s Artists of the Year will air Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. ET.
