Cam Reflects on Her Red Rocks Moment

Her Post-Show Reality Check

It’s one thing to get an invitation to open for one of your idols. But then to actually do it? Cam’s still not over it.

Eric Church asked Cam to open for him at his Aug. 10 show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver, and after it was all said and done, she reflected on what it meant to her.

“Of all the current country music artists who have influenced me, Eric Church’s music is at the forefront,” she said. “I would reach out to co-writers because they wrote songs with him, compare my mixes with his and even pick the songs on my album based on the flow of his Chief album.”

The performance and the encouragement from Church, Cam said, is “a real validation of the spirit.”

At the end of his show that night, Church had Cam come back to the stage so they could sing his 2013 hit “Like Jesus Does” together.

“I’ve belted out his songs in my car for the past four years, and his album Chief hasn’t left the car since it came out,” she said. “So to find myself actually harmonizing with Eric onstage and not in my car, the two of us sharing a spotlight, surrounded by the unreal vibe of Red Rocks, that’s a memory I’ll carry with me forever.”

Alison makes her living loving country music. She's based in Chicago, but she's always leaving her heart in Nashville.
