Billy Joe Shaver Will Have Heart Surgery

Texas-based singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver will have quadruple heart bypass surgery Friday (Aug. 31) at Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in Waco. Shaver, 62, is hospitalized in stable condition after suffering a heart attack last Saturday (Aug. 25) following a performance at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. He first attributed his illness to intense heat at the unairconditioned club. When symptoms persisted, however, Shaver visited his doctor, who found Wednesday (Aug. 29) that the singer has blockage in four arteries. He will remain in the hospital about a week after his surgery and probably will postpone some September concert dates. Shaver’s latest album is The Earth Rolls On, recorded with his late son, Eddy Shaver. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, John Anderson, Bobby Bare and numerous others have recorded Shaver’s songs. 08/29/01
