Steel Guitarist Newman Dies in Plane Crash

Steel Guitar Hall of Fame member Jeff Newman, 62, died Wednesday (April 7) when the ultralight plane he was piloting crashed on his private runway in Watertown, Tenn. Although he had worked with artists as musically diverse as Ferlin Husky, Jim & Jesse and Alex Chilton, Newman was perhaps best known as a music instructor. He produced a series of instructional videos and operated the Jeffran College of Pedal Steel in Watertown. Authorities said Newman was attempting to land the small plane when it began spiraling toward the runway at a steep angle. No other passengers were aboard.
