Earl Scruggs Surprises IBMA Crowd

An appearance by banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs proved to be an unexpected highlight at the International Bluegrass Music Association's Fan Fest that concluded Sunday (Oct. 7) in Nashville. Bluegrass veteran Carl Jackson introduced the Country Music Hall of Fame member prior to Emmylou Harris' Friday night (Oct. 5) set at the Nashville Convention Center. Appearing with a band that featured fiddler-vocalist Lizzy Long, Scruggs was in excellent form as they performed a brief set that included his signature instrumental, "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." Harris was accompanied by members of the band Carolina Star as she performed a selection of gospel and secular songs that included acoustic versions of several of her major country hits including "One of These Days." Scruggs and Harris appeared Sunday at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
