OFFSTAGE: Dixie Chicks Made Banjo Sexy, Too

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

This is what Dixie Chick Natalie Maines had to say about the Grammy awards: "Haven't seen anybody make the banjo look sexy since Emily Robison. #goodjobtaylorswift" Isn't that sweet? Maines was tweeting her thoughts on the performances during the broadcast, and apparently she must've loved Taylor Swift's big "Mean" number. But from what I can tell, that was really the only compliment Maines had for country music that night. She apparently thought Jason Aldean was "pitchy" during his performance with Kelly Clarkson. Then she got into a bit of a rant about the genre in general, saying, "As far as you thinking I was ever some lover of country music, you just thought wrong. I've got a handful of country people I like, but I've always been very open about my musical preferences. I liked the Dixie Chicks. I didn't know I had to sign on for everything country. Music's subjective. There shouldn't be rules. Different strokes for different folks. All the best, N." She added that she will still sing Dixie Chicks songs but that "Top 40 country just hasn't ever been my thing." (The Dixie Chicks' official Twitter page had nothing to say about the country performances at the Grammys.) I suppose if we're ever going to convince the Dixie Chicks to start making music again, it's going to have to have less of a Top 40 feel. And way more sexy banjo songs.
