Eric Church, Little Big Town Top CMA Nominations

Singer-Songwriter Chris Stapleton Makes Strong Showing in Three Categories

Eric Church and Little Big Town grabbed five nominations each to top the list of nominees for the 49th annual CMA Awards, but singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton made a surprisingly strong showing with nominations in three categories.

Steven Tyler and Kelsea Ballerini announced the main nominations Wednesday morning (Sept. 9) on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert received four nominations, and Sam Hunt, Maddie & Tae, Kacey Musgraves and Stapleton each received three.

While Stapleton has enjoyed success writing songs for mainstream, the success of his album, Traveller, was not driven by strong airplay on country radio stations. However, the Kentucky-born musician remains a favorite within the Nashville community, and he received CMA nominations for album of the year, male vocalist of the year and new artist of the year.

This year’s CMA Awards show will be hosted for the eighth time by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. ABC will broadcast the event live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 4.
