She'll Make Her Stage Debut as Roxie Hart

Jennifer Nettles has announced she will star in the Broadway production of Chicago beginning in February of 2015.

Appearing on NBC's Today on Tuesday (Dec. 9), Nettles revealed she will play the lead role of Roxie Hart in the award-winning Prohibition-themed musical.

"I am gonna be on Broadway for the first time," she cheerfully announced while dodging raindrops with the NBC co-hosts.

When asked why she chose Chicago for her theatrical debut, Nettles said she loved the story's broad scope.

"It's fun, it's lighthearted - a little lighthearted ditty about murder!" she joked. "It's very fun and the dancing, to get to learn all of that ... I can't wait."

Explaining that performing live and without any technology to back her up would be a thrill, Nettles said the chance to work in New York City's famed theater district was too good to pass up.

"Broadway has always been a special, magical place, with a wonderful tradition of singers and actors," she said in a press statement. "I feel honored and proud to be part of this great tradition. Taking on such an iconic role as Roxie in Chicago is a dream come true."

Nettles will play Chicago's main character Roxie Hart from Feb. 2 through March 29 at the Ambassador Theatre. She recently hosted ABC's CMA Country Christmas for the fifth time.
