Blake Shelton: The Boy Inside the Man

Genius.com Lyric Annotations Reveal His Inner Child

This is how you really get to know a guy: Ask him to dig deep when he analyzes his own song lyrics.

That’s what Genius.com did, and it shows a side of Blake Shelton I never really knew. The side that likes to chew tons of gum at once (probably watermelon-flavored when he was growing up) and has a high school girlfriend sitting right next to him on the bench seat of his pickup truck.

So this Shelton is kind of like I envision what Shelton might have been like when he was about 17 years old.

From his “Mine Would Be You” hit, there’s the line “What’s your guilty pleasure, your old go to.” And this is what he has to say:

“I chew a lot of pieces of gum at one time," he admits. "One is not good enough for me. I’ve made some extra money along the way, and now I don’t mind splurging on gum. So I’ll chew like three pieces at a time," Shelton admits. "I like Orange Orbit. I like bubblegum flavor Extra. I like Big League Chew and Bubble Tape.”

From his “Doin’ What She Likes,” when he’s singing about lighting watermelon candles, Shelton explains that that’s just a smell he’s into.

From “Sure Be Cool If You Did,” when he paints the picture of meeting “in the middle of a moonlit Chevy bench seat," Shelton thinks back to his first love.
