Taylor Swift Overtakes Barbara Streisand For Most No. 1 Albums From A Female Artist In History

Taylor Swift's "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" is her 12th No. 1 album, and the collection nabbed the most successful first week this year.

Seventeen years after Taylor Swift debuted in country music with her hit “Tim McGraw,” she collected one of her career’s most impressive accolades.

Swift’s rerecorded version of her 2010 “Speak Now” album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated July 22), the highest first-week numbers for any album released this year. In addition, the top position earns Swift her 12th No. 1 – enough to topple Barbra Streisand for the most No. 1 albums from a female artist.

Billboard reports that “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” accumulated 716,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 13 -- and 507,000 are in album sales (not streaming). Both numbers are the largest first week for any album this year, and the best since Swift’s last studio album, “Midnights,” which came out in October. Three more of Swift’s albums are also in the Top 10, “Midnights” (No. 5), “Lover” (No. 7) and “Folklore” (No. 10).

“It fills me with such pride and joy to announce that my version of Speak Now will be out July 7 (just in time for July 9th, iykyk 😆),” Swift wrote on Instagram when she announced the album. “I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing … and living to speak about it. With six extra songs I’ve sprung loose from the vault, I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) with you on July 7th.”

Swift is the first living artist to have four albums in the Top 10 since Herb Alpert in 1966, according to Billboard.

“Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” is the third offering in her series of rerecorded albums. Swift opted to start rerecording her first six albums when Scooter Braun was part of an entity that bought her record label along with her music catalog in 2020. The idea behind re-recording the albums is that Swift retains control of the most recent versions of her recorded work. She’s using the opportunity to update some of her lyrics – and it’s in theme with her Eras tour, which revisits each era of her career.

Swift has three U.S. cities remaining on her Eras Tour, which will conclude Aug. 9 in Los Angeles.
