"You Are My Sunshine" Added to National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress

Jimmie Davis' "You Are My Sunshine" and Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson's Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's are two of 25 recordings added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for 2012, it was announced Thursday (March 21). "You Are My Sunshine" had been recorded at least three times before Davis recorded it in 1940. Although Davis, a former Louisiana governor, is credited on the sheet music for the song, his actual involvement in writing the song has been disputed by historians for many years. Recorded in 1960-62, Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's features Ashley, a singer and banjo player, and helped introduce Watson to a national audience. Other albums added to the National Recording Registry include Simon & Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence (1966) and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon (1973). Also added was Chubby Checker's 1960 recording of "The Twist."
