Dan + Shay's "10,000 HOURS" Becomes First Song With A Country Lead To Earn 1 Billion Spotify Streams

Dan + Shay: "That means the song has been listened to for approximately 46,388,889 hours (and counting). That's also about how long it would take us to express how grateful we are for everyone who helped make this happen."

Dan + Shay raised a few eyebrows in 2019 when they teamed with pop star Justin Bieber for their smash hit "10,000 HOURS." The men were high on a string of awards show wins and radio successes with songs like "Tequila," "Speechless" and "All To Myself." Looping in Bieber at the peak of the duo's success was a risk because it was unknown how their fans and country radio would react.

"10,000 HOURS" went on to be a No. 1 hit at country radio – and today became the first song with a country artist lead to garner 1 billion streams on Spotify.

"That means the song has been listened to for approximately 46,388,889 hours (and counting)," Dan + Shay explained on social media. "That's also about how long it would take us to express how grateful we are for everyone who helped make this happen.

Thank you for listening and being a part of this milestone that we'll never forget!"

The milestone comes about one week after the 11th anniversary of the day the men met. Smyers threw a house party in his rented Nashville home on Dec. 7, 2012. He and a buddy found the place on Craigslist and there was no heat, no air conditioning, and it was about 26 degrees — inside — the day of the gathering. Mooney came with some friends, and as often happens in Nashville, he brought a guitar and started singing.

"I pulled out my phone and recorded him on a voice memo, which I still have, him just singing with an acoustic guitar," Smyers told The Tennessean. "I think I labeled it 'The Greatest Singer Ever.'"

The next day, Smyers and Mooney got together and wrote two songs – one of which Rascal immediately put on hold and recorded. Dan + Shay wrote several songs every day for the next few weeks, demoing what they wrote with the intention of getting other country artists to record their tracks.

"We didn't know it at the time, but all the demos we were working on, we were writing our first record," Smyers said. "We turned it into the 'Where It All Began' album."

Eleven years later, the men always make it a priority to get together and celebrate the day they met.

"We're truly so grateful for all the support y'all have shown us over the years and hope our music continues to mean as much to you as it does to us," they said on Instagram.
