John Michael Montgomery's Attorney Responds to Arrest

Singer Faces Drunk Driving, Drugs and Weapons Charges

A lawyer representing John Michael Montgomery has issued a statement regarding the singer's arrest early Thursday morning (Feb. 16) in Lexington, Ky., on alcohol, drug and weapons charges. Montgomery was pulled over after running a red light and then driving erratically, according to a report issued by the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government Division of Police.

The report states that Montgomery was charged with the following: Operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants, two counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, third degree possession of a controlled substance (controlled substances may be possessed only in original container), disregarding a traffic control device and making an improper turn.

Attorney Jon Woodall, who entered a plea of not guilty when he appeared in court Thursday to answer the charges against his client, explains in the statement that Montgomery is a hunter and had also recently undergone surgery on his hip. In its entirety, here is the statement:

"John Michael is not yet able to comment in detail regarding the impaired driver allegations. We are awaiting completion of a final report to be issued by the arresting officer. Based upon the contents of that report and other evidence, a decision will be made concerning the substantive nature of these charges.

"John Michael is, of course, an avid sportsman and hunter. He has been authorized by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to carry concealed weapons. Unfortunately, John Michael did not have his concealed carry permit with him at the time he was stopped. Once John Michael's permit is produced for law enforcement officials, he is hopeful that these charges will be dismissed.

"Approximately one and a-half months ago, John Michael underwent extensive hip replacement surgery. In order to treat pain associated with that surgery and his recovery, John Michael's physicians have prescribed certain pain medications. The controlled substance charges relate specifically to this prescription medication. Therefore, John Michael is hopeful that the controlled substance charges will also be dismissed.

"John Michael wishes to thank his family, friends and fans for their support as this matter is resolved."

Montgomery was released from the Fayette County Detention Center in Lexington on Thursday morning (Feb. 16). He lives in Nicholasville, Ky., south of Lexington. His No. 1 singles in the '90s include "I Love the Way You Love Me," "I Swear" and "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)."
