CMT Premiere: Charlie Worsham and Luke Combs Team For "How I Learned To Pray"

Charlie Worsham: "What I love most about this video is that it lets the song be the star of the show."

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Worsham is one of country music's most adored talents, and his famous friends lined up to sing with him on his new album "Compadres" that will be available Oct. 13.

The five-track collection includes duets with Dierks Bentley, Elle King, Kip Moore, Lainey Wilson and Luke Combs. Combs joined Worsham on his song "How I Learned To Pray," and the video is out today.

"What I love most about this video is that it lets the song be the star of the show," Worsham said. "You get to see behind the curtain a little bit with me and Luke singing in the studio, but so much of the footage leaves things up to the fan's imagination. That's what all my favorite songs do – allow the listener to inject their own life story into the song and video."

Worsham wrote the song with Jeremy Spillman and Ryan Tyndell, and it was first featured on his "Rubberband" album. What makes this version with Combs remarkable to Worsham is that he knows he's been a longtime fan of the "How I Learned To Pray" and that it inspired him many years ago.

"The collaboration between Luke and I is one of those magical, only-in-Nashville, will-the-circle-be-unbroken kind of things that made me love country music in the first place," he said. "When I hear 'Pray' now, I hear how far I've come and how much I've learned about life and music, and it feels pretty damn good."

In an unexpected turn of events fitting for the song, Worsham and his wife had to take their son, Gabe, to the emergency room on the morning he was supposed to overdub his guitars, mandolin, vocals and a few other things. He was supposed to be at the studio at 10 a.m., but he said "as life would have it," it didn't work out.

"Long story short, Gabe was okay, and we eventually got to the studio later in the day," Worsham said. "I don't think I'd ever had to juggle between dad life and session life quite like that before! Talk about "How I Learned To Pray!"

Worsham hopes fans will hear their own life experiences in "How I Learned To Pray" lyrics and get some validation that they're on the right path.

"Life is crazy, and it helps when you can feel like you're not alone in living it," he said. "Faith is a critical part of my life, but it doesn't often fit neatly within the lines so much as scribble its way into all my highs and lows. If you really want to get perspective on faith and life coming full circle, check out the original version of 'Pray' from my album 'Rubberband,' then listen again to the new version with Luke. Hindsight ain't 20/20 so much as it is a chance to see what God saw all along."
