Singer/songwriter Derek Austin has a plea – if you're going to break his heart, slam the door, burn the bridge and leave him no hope for a reconciliation. In other words, as he says in his new song, "Make Me Hate You."

Austin co-wrote "Make Me Hate You" with Jennifer Denmark, Eric Van Houten and Jimmy Robbins, who also produced the song. The video, which is out now, was produced and directed by Wales Toney of Whale Tale Media, shows the different stages of a bad breakup.

"The good times are shown through the lighthearted bar scenes," Austin said. "The middle of the breakup is shown through the fight scenes at my house, and the post-breakup scenes show me back at the bar - alone."

The singer explained the video challenged his acting skills but did "a great job" moving viewers through the song.

"I enjoy being the one acting out the scenes as opposed to being the narrator," he said, explaining that he hopes fans take away a piece of themselves when they watch the video.

"If they've been through a breakup, or even if they haven't, I hope it communicates that feeling of needing to totally break ties and wanting to hate someone in order to move on from that person," he said. "Growing up, I always loved when I would hear a song that made me feel like someone climbed inside my head and said what I was feeling. Creating music that makes others feel that same way is always my goal with my music and definitely my goal with this video."

Austin said it's always a rollercoaster ride getting a video back for the first time, but he couldn't be happier with this one.

"You're taking in all the hard work, ideas, and the story in a three-minute barrage, but simultaneously also trying to make notes or edit things," he said. "When I saw the final video, the mood, the lighting, and the fight scenes really sold it for me!"

Austin is a Minnesota-born, Nashville-based country singer/songwriter who has penned songs for Tim McGraw, Tyler Chambers and Jon Wood.
