CMT Premiere: Sierra Ferrell Hopes Listeners Find Connection in "American Dreaming"

Sierra Ferrell: "That's the beauty of music, right? It's our shared emotional connections to the song."

Singer-songwriter Sierra Ferrell hopes her song and video, "American Dreaming," evoke emotional connection in those who hear and watch the clip.

"That's the beauty of music, right?" the roots singer said. "It's our shared emotional connections to the song."

Ferrell quoted the lyrics: "I'm American dreaming, but I never seem to get no rest."

"Just that phrase itself is something most of us can relate to with our own life experiences, past or present," she added. "And the video really captures how I see that in my own life."

Ferrell wrote "American Dreaming" with Melody Walker. Eddie Spear produced it, and Bobbi Rich produced and directed the video. Aaron Preusch is video editor.

The video includes clips of concerts, soundchecks and backstage life from different locations around the country. The West Virginia-born multi-instrumentalist said much of the footage was recorded before she knew how she wanted to use it.

"It certainly captures the emotional spark for the song," Ferrell said. "What I mean is that I get the same feeling watching the video that I did when I was writing the song. And really, can you ask for more from a music video?"

Ferrell wants people to feel joy when they see it.

"The footage of our life on the road and the vintage fashion in which a lot of it was shot in 8mm, really brings that emotion home," she said. "It's like watching an old home video your mom captured from a picnic in the front yard when you were 8 years old. It makes me smile."

Ferrell considers herself roots music, was recognized as the Emerging Act of the Year at the Americana Honors & Awards and has collaborated with the Margo Price, the Black Keys, Shakey Graves, Zach Bryan, Diplo and Old Crow Medicine Show.
