Roots Music Songwriter Bobby Charles Dies

Robert Charles Guidry, known professionally as songwriter Bobby Charles, died at his home in Abbeville, La., on Thursday (Jan. 14). He was 71. Charles wrote the early rock 'n' roll standard "See You Later, Alligator" and the Fats Domino hit "Walking to New Orleans" among many others. After performing on The Band's 1976 farewell concert, the Last Waltz, Charles withdrew from public life and lived outside Abbeville. In 2003, he released a double album of his songs, Last Train to Memphis. Musical guests on the album included Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Domino, Delbert McClinton and Maria Muldaur.
