Guitarist Dan Toler, a mainstay of the Southern rock scene of the '70s and '80s, died Monday (Feb. 25) in Sarasota, Fla., following a lengthy battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was 64. A native of Indiana, he gained national recognition in the late '70s as a member of Dickey Betts & Great Southern. He was featured on two albums with them before becoming a member of the Allman Brothers Band in 1979. He was featured on the Allman Brothers Band's Enlightened Rogues (1979), Reach for the Sky (1980) and Brothers of the Road (1981). After exiting the band in 1982, he and his late brother David (Frankie) Toler were members of the Gregg Allman Band and were featured on Allman's I'm No Angel and Just Before the Bullets Fly (1988). During the past decade, Dan Toler performed with the Renegades of Southern Rock, a band featuring George McCorkle of the Marshall Tucker Band, John Townsend from the Sanford-Townsend Band and Jack Hall from Wet Willie. He also worked with TGZ and reunited with Townsend for the Toler/Townsend Band.
