The Mavericks Still Together, Searching for Deal

Despite persistent breakup rumors and various side projects, The Mavericks are still together, according to the band's manager. Frank Callari told country.com he is currently talking to record labels in New York, Los Angeles and London about a new deal for the Mavericks and a separate solo deal for lead singer Raul Malo. For the past year, Malo has been working on a solo pop album, which includes some songs in Spanish. Callari said the disc should be out early next year. Bassist Robert Reynolds and drummer Paul Deakin will tour overseas this month with singer/songwriter Kevin Montgomery. Reynolds also has been playing in a side group called Swag, which includes Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, Ken Coomer of Wilco, and former Mavericks piano player Jerry Dale McFadden. Longtime Mavericks guitarist Nick Kane is no longer with the band, Callari said. Kane recently told the Nashville Scene that he was fired in May. Guitarist Kenny Vaughan joined The Mavericks recently when the group opened three dates for the Dave Matthews Band. Vaughan is most known for his work with Lucinda Williams and Kim Richey. The Mavericks have been in flux since leaving longtime label, MCA Nashville, in 1999. Callari says the band "was disappointed" about lackluster U.S. sales and airplay for 1998's critically acclaimed Trampoline, the band's last MCA project. Although the album was a huge success in Europe, the record's horn-laced Latin sound never caught on with American country radio. Late last year the band was shuffled to MCA's sister label, Mercury Records, which released Super Colossal Smash Hits of the '90s: The Best of the Mavericks. The greatest hits collection sold only moderately, causing the CMA and ACM award-winning band to redirect its focus. "We know we're not a country band anymore, and country radio is changing," Callari explained. "So, we asked the label to let us go. There's no animosity. We're very happy about it." The band was released from Mercury last spring.
